OBRA GRUESA
Obra Gruesa is a site-specific light, laser and video installation for the Gran Sala of the GAM in Santiago, conceived for the hall in its raw concrete stage. In that state the theatre is pure structure. Concrete walls, towers, slabs and balconies expose the basic geometry that holds the building up.
The laser draws that geometry at the scale of the monument, with beams that emerge from the video and cross the hall to its back wall. PAR lights enter diagonally as if through tall windows, strobes burst in backlight, and at the far end of the rear stage the video lights up, framed by the 16 x 13 m proscenium and the 18 x 12 m opening. All equipment rests on the floor of the hall, its galleries and its balconies. Nothing is rigged.
The hall was modelled from the project drawings and on-site measurements, and the piece was programmed and filmed in Unreal, synchronised to the music. It continues the line of VM001 and SILO, laser on concrete architecture.
